A powerful earthquake has left Japan mourning once again, with fears growing that the death toll could climb to 23 as emergency teams continue their desperate search for survivors trapped beneath the ruins of a devastated shopping mall.
Rescue operations remain underway in Kumamoto, southwestern Japan, where a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck with tremendous force. Authorities have confirmed 17 deaths, while six more people remain without vital signs. Five others are in critical condition, highlighting the immense human cost of the disaster.
One of the most heartbreaking scenes is at the Aeon shopping mall in Kashima, where rescuers have spent days carefully navigating collapsed concrete, twisted steel, and shattered structures. Officials confirmed that 10 people have been pulled from the wreckage. Four were pronounced dead, one showed no vital signs, and five others sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.
The earthquake caused widespread destruction across Japan’s Kyushu island, damaging homes, bridges, roads, and public infrastructure. Fires broke out in several areas, while thousands of families suddenly found themselves without electricity or clean water. Adding to the tragedy, the region has experienced a series of strong aftershocks since the initial quake. Elsewhere in Kumamoto Prefecture, another tragedy unfolded at the Nippon Paper Industries factory in Yatsushiro City, where part of a towering smokestack collapsed. Officials confirmed five workers lost their lives, while four others remain missing as search efforts continue.
The earthquake has also severely disrupted essential services. More than 22,000 households remain without electricity, while approximately 84,000 homes continue to face water supply interruptions. Television footage has shown long lines of residents waiting for fuel, bottled water, and emergency supplies as authorities work to restore normal services.
Japan remains one of the most earthquake-prone nations in the world due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several major tectonic plates meet. The country experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year, although only a small number result in widespread destruction.
The people of Kumamoto know this reality all too well. The region was devastated by major earthquakes in 2016 that claimed 273 lives and injured thousands more. Even today, memories of those events remain vivid, making the latest disaster especially painful for local communities.
