The National University of Singapore is taking a major step toward preparing students for an AI-driven future.
Beginning in August 2026, all NUS undergraduates will be required to complete compulsory artificial intelligence courses, making AI literacy a core part of the university experience regardless of a student’s chosen field.
The move reflects a growing reality across education and employment: artificial intelligence is no longer limited to computer science classrooms. From healthcare and business to public policy, engineering and the humanities, AI is increasingly influencing how professionals work, make decisions and solve problems.
According to The Straits Times, NUS announced the initiative on August 11 as part of a university-wide strategy designed to ensure students develop practical AI knowledge before graduating.
AI education will reach students across every major
At the centre of the new strategy is a university-wide module titled Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation.
Additional AI-related courses will also be incorporated into the common curricula of major NUS colleges, including the College of Humanities and Sciences, College of Design and Engineering, Business School and Healthcare Professional Education.
Together, these schools represent more than 85 percent of the university’s undergraduate population.
But NUS is going beyond teaching students how to use generative AI tools.
Each major will introduce at least one compulsory course exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming that particular profession.
Political science students, for example, may study Artificial Intelligence and Public Policy, while business students will encounter courses such as Decision Analytics using Spreadsheets and AI.
The idea is straightforward: students should understand not only what AI can do, but also what it means for the careers they are preparing to enter.
NUS wants graduates to become AI fluent
NUS deputy president for academic affairs and provost Aaron Thean said the university wants every student to graduate “AI fluent”, while allowing students with a deeper interest to pursue advanced specialisation.
Thean also stressed that the purpose of the university is not simply to create better AI users.
The focus, he explained, remains on developing people.
That distinction could become increasingly important as universities worldwide grapple with a difficult question: how can technology improve education without replacing the human thinking, judgment and creativity that education is supposed to develop?
NUS appears to be approaching AI as a tool that should strengthen those human capabilities rather than eliminate them.
Students and staff will receive free ChatGPT Edu access
The university is also giving its community direct access to AI technology.
From August 31, all NUS students, faculty and staff will receive free access to ChatGPT Edu, a university-controlled version of ChatGPT designed for educational environments, with higher message limits and enhanced privacy features.
More advanced AI tools will also be tested in selected courses where students need deeper exposure to artificial intelligence, particularly in areas such as computing.
For students, this could mean that AI assistance becomes less of an optional technology and more of a normal part of university learning.
NUS is building its own AI teaching tools
The university is not relying entirely on existing AI platforms.
NUS is developing seven in-house AI teaching tools designed to support both students and educators.
Among the tools is a scenario generator capable of creating AI-powered simulations. Another uses a Socratic-style coaching approach, asking students questions designed to encourage stronger reasoning rather than simply providing answers.
Other systems are expected to help instructors identify learning gaps, monitor participation and encourage students to critically examine AI-generated responses.
That last element may prove particularly important.
As AI becomes increasingly capable of producing convincing answers, knowing whether an answer sounds correct will not necessarily be enough. Students will also need to understand how to question, verify and evaluate what AI produces.
AI simulations are already being used in nursing education
NUS is already putting this philosophy into practice.
Its nursing programme uses AI-powered simulations to give students realistic scenarios before they enter actual clinical environments.
Students can experience situations in which a patient’s condition deteriorates in real time. They must respond, make decisions and explain the reasoning behind their choices.
Fourth-year nursing student Nicholas Lau said the simulations have helped him remain calm while thinking critically under pressure.
This illustrates one of the potentially powerful applications of AI in education: allowing students to practise difficult decisions repeatedly in controlled environments before facing similar situations in the real world.
Singapore’s universities are moving quickly on AI
NUS is not alone in transforming its approach to artificial intelligence.
Nanyang Technological University introduced mandatory AI literacy lessons for its students earlier in 2026 and announced plans to provide access to premium Google AI tools.
The developments at both universities point to a broader shift in Singapore’s higher education system.
AI literacy is increasingly being treated as a foundational skill rather than a specialised subject reserved for technology students.
With around 29,600 undergraduates spread across 15 colleges, faculties and schools, NUS’s new strategy represents one of the country’s most significant efforts to integrate AI into university education.
What this could mean for the next generation of graduates
The most important part of this announcement may not be the free access to ChatGPT.
It may be the decision to make AI education relevant to every discipline.
A future doctor will need to understand how AI influences healthcare. A business graduate may work alongside AI-powered analytics. A designer may collaborate with generative systems. A policymaker may have to regulate technologies that are evolving faster than traditional institutions.
The question is no longer whether students will encounter artificial intelligence after graduation.
They almost certainly will.
The bigger question is whether they will know how to use it responsibly, challenge it when it is wrong, protect human judgment and recognise where technology should not replace people.
NUS is betting that the answer should begin inside the university classroom.
