Trump envoy Kushner sets 30-day timeline for Hamas disarmament push

US President Donald Trump’s envoy Jared Kushner says progress toward getting Hamas to give up its weapons could begin within the next 30 days, as efforts continue to move forward with a broader Gaza peace plan.

Speaking to Fox News in Tel Aviv on Monday, Kushner said there was a possibility of seeing early progress within a month, including steps toward removing some of Hamas’s weapons. He stressed, however, that cooperation from both sides would be essential.

Kushner also said that work to fill or neutralize Gaza’s tunnel network could potentially take place over the following 60 to 90 days. The tunnels have been used by Hamas for military operations and, according to Israeli authorities, for moving supplies.

His comments came after a nearly four-hour meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Kushner said the discussions addressed several concerns raised by Israel, including security guarantees and the future reconstruction of Gaza.

The Trump administration, Kushner said, remains committed to helping rebuild Gaza after the extensive destruction caused during the conflict that followed the October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian militants. But he emphasized that reconstruction would not move forward until there is progress on demilitarization.

Kushner argued that significant international investment in Gaza would be difficult to justify if the territory could once again become a base for armed groups.

He also said the United States would continue to recognize Israel’s right to defend itself against imminent threats, while seeking clarity over how that principle would operate under a future peace arrangement.

According to Kushner, the next 60 to 90 days could become a critical period. He suggested that Hamas could choose to begin disarming voluntarily, potentially creating a path toward reconstruction and a wider political settlement.

If Hamas does not cooperate, Kushner indicated that Israel could receive stronger backing from the United States and other countries to pursue further military action.

Kushner described his meeting with Hamas officials as cordial but acknowledged the deep distrust surrounding the organization.

The coming weeks could therefore prove decisive. Whether the proposed timeline leads to meaningful disarmament, renewed negotiations or further confrontation will depend heavily on the willingness of the parties involved to cooperate and address longstanding security and political concerns.

For civilians in Gaza and Israel, the stakes remain enormous. Beyond military and diplomatic calculations, any progress toward peace could affect the prospects for security, reconstruction, humanitarian assistance and a more stable future for the region.
