The Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has issued a fresh advisory to Indian nationals travelling to Malaysia, warning them not to use the country’s 30-day visa-free entry facility as a way to look for or take up employment.
The warning comes after the High Commission noticed an increase in Indian nationals arriving in Malaysia under the visa-free facility with the intention of finding jobs. According to the advisory shared on X, some travelers are reportedly being misled by agents who make false promises about employment opportunities in Malaysia.
For travelers, the message is straightforward: Malaysia’s 30-day visa-free entry facility for Indian passport holders is intended for tourism and social visits. It does not provide permission to work.
The High Commission warned that people who arrive hoping to find employment without the appropriate authorization can face serious consequences. These may include overstaying their permitted period, becoming undocumented, exploitation, detention and legal action for violating Malaysian immigration regulations.
The issue can become particularly difficult for travelers who have paid money to agents based on promises of guaranteed jobs. Once they arrive in Malaysia, some may discover that the promised employment does not exist or that they do not have the immigration documents required to legally work.
The advisory therefore urges Indian nationals to be particularly careful when dealing with individuals or agencies offering jobs in Malaysia. A promise of employment should not be treated as sufficient authorization to enter the country and start working.
For genuine tourists visiting Malaysia, the High Commission also highlighted the importance of having proper travel documentation. Travelers should have a valid and verifiable return ticket, confirmed accommodation such as a hotel booking, and a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, submitted within the required timeframe before arrival.
Travelers are also advised to ensure that their passports have at least six months of validity. Having the necessary documents available can help reduce potential immigration issues when arriving in Malaysia.
The High Commission has specifically advised Indian nationals not to travel to Malaysia for employment purposes without the appropriate work permit or Visa With Reference, commonly known as VDR.
The warning is an important reminder that entering a country as a tourist and being legally authorized to work there are two different things. A visa-free or visa-exempt entry arrangement does not automatically provide employment rights.
